Psalm 14 Commentary

Psalm 14 Commentary

The Hebrew words rendered ‘fool’ in the Psalms denote one who is morally deficient. We can start with this footnote lifted from the New International Version Bible.

Therefore, this psalm talks about conduct and character that do not honor God. It’s not about atheists as we understand them.

When a society becomes lawless, might rules. Anarchy is the order of the day. Deception becomes the currency of trade. Righteousness suffers. Nothing works, not even for the perpetrators of evil. It’s the result of an absence of governance.

It happens when men and women don’t know God.

Lawlessness doesn’t happen because men don’t know the law. It happens because men elect to ignore the law.

Atheism, therefore, concerns itself with decisions against the Law of the LORD. It has everything to do with morality. There are more atheists than we can possibly tell!

In the midst of lawlessness, is there anyone out there looking at God and crying out to him for help? Is there anyone out there upset about the status quo, someone longing for the governance of God?

Think about it again. Each time we have sinned, we have modified God’s character. We have created our own version of God. From a sin-intolerant God to a sin-loving God. But a sin-loving God doesn’t exist! We have declared a sin-intolerant God non-existent!

But it’s all foolishness because a sin-loving God doesn’t exist! We cannot alter the facts!
