Psalm 12 Commentary
Nostalgia is not a modern sickness. Humanity has always suffered homesickness. The spirit within longs for something that we all know once belonged to humanity. It is no longer there. No one is faithful anymore. It’s not a recent loss. It wasn’t for David.
Ungodliness rules. Everyone lies to their neighbor. Success depends on how much one deceives, or how much one is willing to betray godliness.
The courageous ones are prosperous. The righteous are left red-faced, wondering if, at all, godliness makes sense in the world of business.
The godly man responds as follows: “I cannot; only God can,” and he doesn’t get the deal through. On the other hand, the ungodly man responds: “Yes, I can.” And then presents his profile and a trail of personal successes (mostly deception). He wins the day, and the deal is done.
May the LORD silence all flattering lips!
The scripture declares that the righteous shall live by God’s word. Let it be so.
In response, the LORD declares: “I will now arise, I will protect them from those who malign them.” This word from the LORD is flawless. It can be trusted.
We can, therefore, have the confidence and pray: God, keep us safe from their lies; from the wicked who stalk us with lies; from the wicked who collect honors for their wonderful lies. Indeed, save us from the world of lies and the rule of deception.
