Psalm 10 Commentary

Psalm 10 Commentary

Not only does the wicked man cause pain and suffering to the weak and innocent, but he also raises his fist against the Sovereign God. His actions are a loud and public declaration that God doesn’t care.

He says to himself, “God will never notice; He covers his face and never sees.” And they live in a world where they feel God will never call them to account.

Chapter 9 declares God’s sovereign rule. Chapter 10 highlights the conflict of facts on the ground. The psalmist fails to reconcile the fact of God’s sovereignty and just rule against the havoc wreaked by the wicked. Such a government cannot expect to get any votes in an election! The psalmist is confused.

The psalmist reacts by prayer to the Creator God to intervene and help the helpless – the fatherless and the oppressed. Let God arise and defend His name. Let the evildoer account for his wickedness.

This is instructive. The saint can look at his own world and see the same conflict. The way of the wicked appears prosperous. You are left wondering how you can survive in such a world. Truth and integrity no longer matter. They are a liability.

Deception is the currency of commerce and industry. But the saint must live trustingly and truthfully. He must pray for God’s will to be done here on earth as it is in Heaven. Truth and obedience, justice and faithfulness, mercy and compassion – see how these qualities have become a liability in the world!

But the saint can pray to the LORD for help. We can pray to the LORD for relief from the yoke of sin. We can petition Heaven for the finger of God against wickedness.

The LORD answers prayer.

Then the psalmist declares: the nations will perish from God’s land.

The Creator God does intervene at His own pace and in His own way. The saint is comforted by the thought that the works of the Creator God are perfect, His ways are just, and He does no wrong. Deuteronomy 32:4
