Psalm 7 Commentary
Back in the day, the LORD had provided selected cities as cities of refuge. You sought refuge in one of these cities if you killed someone accidentally. The elders in the city of refuge will protect you from your pursuers until you stand trial in the assembly.
By making God his refuge, David seeks protection against his enemies who want to tear him apart. Let the just God adjudicate his case.
The LORD dictated that Moses set up several cities within the community of God’s people. No one person was too far from a city of refuge. And it was always reachable. No one in history abused this facility like David! For we know he wasn’t always innocent!
In this psalm, David appeals to the Just God. Let justice prevail. Of course, in Psalm 51, he appeals to the Merciful God.
This prayer here provokes us to think of God as our city of refuge. When there is a false accusation, let the saint find his way to the city of refuge and find protection. Let God adjudicate your case. Leave it at the cross for judgment.
But importantly, and like David, we can abuse this facility by finding protection from the LORD when we are actually guilty. We can pray to be forgiven. We can pray for protection against our enemies who want to draw us into self-destruction because of sin.
We can find peace and comfort in God. Like the physical city of refuge, God is only a prayer away. God is always reachable!
