Job 25 Commentary
Bildad responds to Job’s well-placed argument by pointing to the awesome power of God. Who can number his forces? Is Bildad telling Job to shut up because God’s position is final?
We have heard this argument before: “How can a mortal be righteous before God?” But we are shocked because Bildad is still talking about it. If, indeed, no mortal can be righteous, why then has Bildad himself escaped punishment? All along, Bildad and his friends have argued the case that the wicked are always punished.
Bildad pushes the argument that all men have sinned. He would easily be right if his name were Paul and his speech were addressed to the Romans!
But he is talking about someone called Job, whom we all know the LORD has declared righteous. Bildad’s argument, therefore, becomes the argument of many today who still think someone can’t be righteous. But if God declares someone righteous because of Jesus, so be it.
But what is the difference between Bildad and Paul? Paul writes to justify the need for salvation through the righteousness available through the man Jesus Christ.
Bildad, on the other hand, writes to justify wholesale punishment from Heaven on humanity. Of course, on everyone else apart from Bildad himself! We wonder why he hasn’t asked the LORD why punishment hasn’t landed on his head, also, since no mortal can be righteous before the LORD. Bildad’s simplicity is shocking!
