Nehemiah 12 Commentary

Nehemiah 12 Commentary

Priests played an important role in the life of the nation of Israel. The priesthood features prominently in this book.

The wall won’t be dedicated without them!

But there is another office whose light is clearly dim, the office of the “scepter”.

The mention of Zerubbabel reminds us of the genealogy of the man Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew. But it’s a light that is slowly dying out.

In the midst of confusion and uncertainty, the LORD still preserved the seed. Creation was still waiting for Abraham’s seed through whom the nations would be blessed.

Zerubbabel carries the all-important seed. But for now, the focus is on the priesthood.

The New Testament priest can learn something from this book. We still must function even when dominion is yet to come to the fore with the second coming of the Messiah.

Yes, there is Zerubbabel, a direct descendant of King David, but he is not the “son born to us” – the son with the government on His shoulders. Yet the priests must function!

Even now, let the priest function in their role of “holiness to the LORD”. Let praises go up to Heaven from the lips of believers!

But the priests are mere mortals, who, as we learn from the Book of Hebrews, are unable to perfectly perform this duty.

In the LORD Jesus Christ, we have this very important institution fully represented and completed. He is the Chief Priest who perfectly purifies the ‘available and willing’ souls. Then they are ready to offer thanksgiving, praise, and worship to the Creator God.

Here is the point: let the New Testament priests continue to function. We can still interact with our God, even when the rule or scepter appears to have a less impressive footprint!

The rule of the Christ is not dead. At an appropriate time, it will all come good to perfection. The LORD has it all planned, and nothing is working out of place!
