Hezekiah’s story is an indictment of a man who finds himself in a mess because of poor parenting. Who is in a mess because of poor parenting? The story of Hezekiah is your story!
Ahaz didn’t provide the best environment in which to raise children. He had no idea about the God of Israel. Then comes his son, Hezekiah. He is a different man. He defines his own destiny! He is a godly man!
In the first month of the first year of his reign, he opened the doors of the temple of the Lord and repaired them. The first-timer to this Book may not fully appreciate the significance of Hezekiah’s move.
During his father’s reign, business at the temple of the LORD had been halted. Furniture and other movables had been taken out and used in the worship of pagan gods. Hezekiah determined right from the start what his reign was going to be like.
He was aware of the unfaithfulness of his own parents. He fully understood why many fell by the sword, and why their sons and daughters and their wives were in captivity. Hezekiah saw correctly. He turned to the household of faith, the priests and Levites, and encouraged them to resume normal worship services at the temple of the LORD.
But the temple must be cleaned first. Hezekiah knew what many don’t understand today. The Creator God is holy. You cannot invite the LORD to your house without a cleanup exercise. Objects of pagan worship cannot exist alongside the objects of the true worship of the LORD.
You cannot take off without obeying the first and most important law. There is only one God, the Creator God, the LORD, God Almighty. He demands exclusive worship.
Hezekiah then held an important church service. There was music; there was bowing down; there was kneeling down. The LORD God was the center of focus. Let this be the rule for any church gathering. You know the will of the LORD has been achieved when real worship is the end product. Then you can rejoice.
