2 Chronicles 25b Commentary

2 Chronicles 25b Commentary

Amaziah’s religion is interesting. He doesn’t mind other gods as long as he stands to benefit. Of course, He thinks of the God of Abraham as one of the many gods that can be consulted and entreated for favors.

Amaziah isn’t the last man on the list of humans who think of the God of Abraham this way.

Many agree and are actually warmed by the generosity of the God of Abraham. But they also entreat the favors of many other gods.

Amaziah is a selfish man. Many other individuals are like Amaziah. To them, gods exist to serve men. Call them when you need them. Call the god of rain when you need him. If you hear of another god, whatever name they may have (say, Jesus), why not? He becomes a good addition to the collection!

Amaziah thinks the gods of Edom will make him more powerful. Whatever powers the gods of Edom have will make him better. He simply adds to what he already has!

This kind of religion is yet another version of idolatry, but only more dangerous. It makes an individual behave like a lamb because this particular god demands it. But they will also do everything else because those other gods demand so.

BUT the God of Abraham demands exclusive worship! He is the only true God! Amaziah doesn’t just get. He is punished. His end is horrible, as we don’t have clear evidence of his repentance.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no other way. There is no other truth, and there is no other life. The scripture invites humans to investigate this claim and see for themselves.

We become Amaziah each time we worry about our investment in the world. We don’t want losses. But that’s the cost of a wrong decision! Amaziah’s hired hand ravages Judah because it’s a bad hand. The demons you invite won’t leave peacefully.

The LORD may allow you to suffer the consequences of your wrong decisions physically. It helps humans to see the heart of what we trusted in. Amaziah trusted Israel to help, but the same helping hand looted and took off with whatever it came to protect.

In the case of Amaziah and in the actions of Israel, we see the full extent of the definition of the enemy: He comes to steal, kill, and destroy. However, humans are often blinded to the idea that there is help available, and they are willing to pay for it.

BUT the gift of salvation is free. Keep your money, but have it 100%. Probably, the only free thing in the world of business. Jesus paid the full price already!
