2 Chronicles 15 Commentary
The prophet Azariah repeats the terms of the history-long contract between the LORD and Israel. Breach the contract, and nothing works for you. Observe the conditions of the contract, and the LORD will be with you. It is a working formula that worked for David. It has worked for Asa so far. You get the sense that the LORD is urging the King to try this formula. The obedience formula is the only working formula!
Prophecy should always lead you closer to the LORD. Anything else should be looked at as a waste of time. The primary purpose of the pulpit is to get you closer to the LORD. You may learn how to grow vegetables from the pulpit, but that isn’t the primary purpose of the pulpit. The pulpit that never leads you closer to the LORD must be abandoned, even if it has helped you make millions of dollars.
Real rest comes when we have sought the LORD.
As we have seen from the life of Asa, the Christian walk isn’t a talk shop; it is a workshop! Action is always more important. When the word is preached, what action has the saint taken? Asa has taught us to move in with an axe: cut off all wrong things, including ungodly relationships. Some of those relationships could be close to you.
Then the Bible puts forward this very bold proposition: obey me and experience my rest. This is what Asa has experienced. For 35 years, there is no war. It is actually possible to experience rest. This chapter puts forward this challenge to the saint. It is an obedience challenge.
