2 Chronicles 14 Commentary

2 Chronicles 14 Commentary

Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. It’s not always that we hear these words.

We may probably want to know what Asa did to earn this praise from the LORD.  He removed, he smashed, and he cut down idolatry from under his rule.

He removed from Israel the worship of gods.

The New Testament mentions a host of gods, including money and the stomach. Philippians 3:19. If Asa lived today, he would be praised for removing greediness, destroying brothels, and shutting down immoral institutions. He would have a good say on laws that encourage sin.

Then Asa faces a huge problem against Zerah, the Cushite. 580,000 men against an army of 1,000,000 properly equipped men!

But Asa knows what to do. He cries out to the LORD, and the enemy is defeated! It’s a high point in Israel’s history!

“Don’t let mere mortals prevail,” he prayed. Don’t let vanity prevail; don’t let wickedness prevail. Can this be our prayer today?

But this high point is only matched, and actually undone by yet another human low point when Asa decides to trust in chariots. But we have a couple of days before that story. For now, we have an example of a child-like trust that saves Jerusalem from a mighty Cushite army.
