2 Kings 10b Commentary

2 Kings 10b Commentary

Jehu’s assessment of himself was quite impressive.  “Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord,” he once boasted. Verse 16.

But look at God’s assessment of Jehu. “Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit,” according to verse 31.

Jehu’s story tells the difference between “heart obedience” and “brain obedience”. The latter is a human function, while the former is the fruit of the Spirit. Saints must be careful about impressing their own brains that they have obeyed the LORD. What is the heart saying?

“Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” Verse 30b. Check God’s sense of timing in Exodus: “He punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” 34 verse 7b.

Interestingly, Jehu’s dynasty would include Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, and Zechariah. Four generations in terms of births. But they also ruled for nearly 100 years – another near-perfect description of four generations!

At about this same time, we have Baal’s temple in Jerusalem. Chapter 11. But we also have God’s promise of an everlasting dynasty to David.

While Jehu’s partial righteousness earned him a four-generation dynasty, David’s righteousness earned him an everlasting dynasty! But we know it wasn’t about David.

The righteousness of the Son earns you everlasting life! We must read these lines in view of the New Testament. But even in the Old Testament, we find strong references to the Son’s government, which would know no end. Isaiah 9.

So Jehu’s descendants (sons) sit on Israel’s throne for four generations. The sons of Jesus know they rule under the eternal King endlessly.

God’s generosity is such that an individual can decide to be born to Jesus by His Spirit. They become a son. Then they can enjoy life under Jesus’ everlasting government! Being born-again has this kind of depth! It’s everything!
