2 Kings 1 Commentary
A choice between the Creator God and other gods cannot be made casually. It’s a lesson Ahaziah learns very quickly.
Choosing God against other gods isn’t like buying tomatoes from the mall. You pick whatever impresses you! Equally, it isn’t like choosing between football teams. It’s a decision between life and death – eternal life and eternal death.
Ahaziah’s choice had consequences.
For his many sins, Ahab retained a measure of fear for God’s name. He never threatened the prophets of the LORD. He temporarily imprisoned the prophet Micaiah, but was kind enough to provide him with bread and water.
Ahaziah’s wickedness was extreme! It was a small matter for him to want to capture Elijah by force. Elijah represented a “god” he didn’t like. But Elijah’s God was the Creator God, the LORD God Almighty. Ahaziah should have known better!
Who do we consult when trouble hits?
You probably haven’t scorned God the Ahaziah way, but what is your view of God’s representative – the LORD Jesus?
What you think of Jesus reveals your heart. Is he just one of the many ways to a solution? Or, He is your Master.
You cannot answer these questions casually. It’s a matter of life and death!
