2 Samuel 23b Commentary

2 Samuel 23b Commentary

It’s a small line but quite significant: “The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.” Verse 2.

The Spirit of the LORD spoke though David. The LORD Jesus confirms it in Mark 12:36.

“David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’”

Yes, we have looked at the historical man, David. We also know he composed songs and sung them to the LORD God. He also prayed more times than we care to count. Check the following:

“Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.” Psalm 55:17

Our view of David is shaped by his many activities as a family man, a military man, and as a king. But to God, David was more. He was a special tool called to deliver on God’s promise to save Israel from the Philistines, the task King Saul failed to do.

He spoke to the LORD as we can clearly see from his many psalms, many of which are recorded in the Book of Psalms. The LORD spoke through him as evidenced by verse 2 of this chapter. He was a prophet! But the LORD also spoke to him through the prophets, Nathan and Gad.

We also know the LORD spoke to David through other means.

If you are looking at how God speaks to mortals, David would be a good starting point. You could also start from there for your prayer life – how to petition the LORD for answers.

The list of David’s mighty men reveals the heart of a man who believed in teamwork. Of course, it’s obvious and doesn’t deserve mention. But when we consider Samson’s life, a lone warrior who knew nothing about teamwork, then we know anointing operates within the framework of God’s community. You cannot be the only intelligent and brave man in the team.

Many of the men on this list like Asahel and Abishai are part of a group of “scoundrels” and “nobodies” who gathered around him during his formative years. He grew with them! You cannot be the only one growing.

Of the many things that David was, it’s his role as the shepherd-king that stands tallest as it mirrors the work of the Son – the son born to us.
