1 Samuel 22b Commentary
It’s the nature of sin that a man fears everything else apart from his Creator. Saul doesn’t hesitate to raise his hand against the priests of the LORD.
In his own words, he says: “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD.” He isn’t afraid to mess with the property of the Creator God – the LORD God Almighty.
Saul’s officials know better. They defy the king. They won’t be part of his crimes. You admire their devotion. They know it’s better to defy a loose canon than sin against the LORD in the manner that Saul ordered.
You would wish Saul’s anger raged against the LORD’s enemies – the Philistines! He showed muscle and type against innocent servants of the LORD. He slaughters an entire town of priests – everything living, including animals.
When demons are in control… there is no limit to wickedness! Saul’s journey on the heavenly path is done!
But let’s open a couple of tabs. Who is Ahimelek? He is the son of Ahitub – the grandson of the priest Eli. Remember God’s judgment against the house of Eli!
The LORD God rains down the consequences of wickedness on generations. You are judged for your own wickedness, but also for the wickedness of your ancestors. Of course, topping the pile of wickedness is the failure to repent the wickedness of your ancestors – maintaining the status quo!
Interestingly, a man’s righteousness cascades down his own generations. His righteousness is remembered, and his children may enjoy favor. You could think of the righteousness of the saint because of Jesus’ perfection!
Saul’s crimes would be remembered. Saul’s crimes ensured Eli’s crimes were remembered! Wickedness is doubly terrible. Horribly bad. How the saint should hate it! It’s the real enemy.
