1 Samuel 20b Commentary

1 Samuel 20b Commentary

Probably Jonathan understood something about his father. He feared for his life – probably in the process helping David, or as he performed acts of righteousness.

Evil doesn’t have eyes. Jonathan survived his father’s spear. But it wasn’t the first time. Chapter 14 verse 44. And it wasn’t always because of David!

Yes, Jonathan wouldn’t be king, and David wasn’t the reason.

Evil doesn’t reason. Jonathan wouldn’t be king because of Saul’s ungodliness. Nothing else. David was innocent; Jonathan was equally innocent. If things won’t work out, know who to confront. Saul needed to confront the LORD God, who had appointed and disappointed him.

It’s the nature of ungodliness that the fight for life is misplaced. The enemy is not unknown. Saul fights everyone else, apart from the real enemy!

Jonathan’s intervention wasn’t riskless! Relationships that can’t tolerate risk to self aren’t godly.

We also learn that evil spirits so dehumanized Saul that he considered killing his own son as nothing.

It is said that no night is so long that there aren’t any rays of light here and there. Jonathan is David’s light – he is the instrument the LORD uses to save David at a critical moment in his life.
