1 Samuel 18 Commentary

1 Samuel 18 Commentary

The anointing (the Spirit of the LORD) on David has very interesting results.

Jonathan deeply loves David. Verse 1.

The troops and army officers are pleased with David. Verse 5.

The women praise David’s name. Verse 7. One of them is intimately connected – Michal, King Saul’s daughter. She loves David. Verse 20.

All Israel and Judah love David. Verse 16.

David has great success in everything he does. Verse 14.

But there is a problem: King Saul hates David.

This is one lesson saints never learn. The presence of the LORD with the saint brings a great amount of goods, but there is also hatred from God’s enemies.

Hatred increases with each blessing.

Attacks are active and real. They persist. Attacks may rise from physically more powerful entities. They carefully scheme the saint’s downfall.

“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

You don’t have to do anything wrong to be hated. If anything, it’s your association with Jesus that attracts the hatred.

Through the songs of Israel’s women, we learn of Saul’s diminished ministry. He retains the title but there is no function.

His appointment to kingship had one purpose: To deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines. Chapter 9 verse 16. Saul failed the mission. Even at this point, David had done more than Saul! The women sang the truth, albeit “unwisely”.
