1 Samuel 14b Commentary
Chapter 14 tells us a lot about Saul’s poor religion.
He says in verse 19, “There’s no time to consult the LORD.” Unbelievable!
But look at Jonathan, he understands everything and knows the LORD is at work. The enemy army (the Philistines) melts away because of Jonathan’s intercession. The LORD acts in response to Jonathan’s simple but earnest faith.
Jonathan prays and waits for a yes or no from the LORD. He is willing and ready to take the LORD’s guidance, regardless. He doesn’t rely on rituals and other religions implements. No Ephod. No priest. No religions incantations.
On the other hand is Saul. He cannot do without the Ephod and the priest and the numbers around him.
Yes, the Ephod is important to Saul but only as a tool.
The scripture hasn’t mentioned it, but we can guess the Spirit of the LORD has empowered Jonathan in an ordinary way – a way that we can easily relate to.
Samson was empowered in a special way and saved Israel a number of times. Other Judges would have the same experiences. But Jonathan’s anointing is simple; it’s based on faith.
When the heart is straight, one could ask the LORD for direction and seek a sign for it. Of course, it has everything to do with God’s will. In this case, the salvation of Israel from her enemies – a mission that Saul’s ungodliness couldn’t undertake.
You don’t need structures to operate the instructions of the LORD. Saul isn’t even aware that Jonathan is missing!
You don’t need numbers to do God’s will. Jonathan was a lone soldier!
You don’t need permits to act on God’s word. You don’t need titles to perform your generosity. You can pray for a sister or a brother without any approvals!
We also learn that Saul ordered “fasting and prayer”, or “fasting and fighting” to take revenge on his enemies. See how he underlines the word “I” even when we all know he has nothing to do with the victory!
Yes, this chapter should be about Jonathan, but we know the scripture is talking about Saul’s failings. These could be our failings. Check if the word “I” is bold, capitalized, and underlined as you converse with others. Check your fear levels. Check your faith levels and know your spiritual standing.
