Ruth 3b Commentary
What is the role of a man in a woman’s life? Chapter 3 is rich in pointers to answering this all-important question.
A man protects; a man provides. A man covers. This is Naomi’s view of Ruth’s marriage to Boaz. Indeed, this is Boaz’s view.
In this chapter, “Will you marry me?” is equivalent to, “Spread the corner of your garment over me”.
Naomi understands it. Ruth knows what she is talking about. Boaz understands it.
It’s all about care and everything that comes with care.
Naomi has been a mother to Ruth. But Ruth also needs a father. They must find someone who thinks of her and treats her like a daughter. It’s always a great injustice when a woman is regarded and treated as less than a daughter by the man she marries. Then she misses her dad.
A man must make the woman safe. “… my daughter, don’t be afraid”.
Of course, there is an agenda to misguide the godly process so that Ruth remains Ruth, without a Boaz in her life. Equally and more frightening, a Boaz shouldn’t exist.
Satanic ideas aren’t new. Boaz and Ruth lived during the time of the Judges – a time of extreme wickedness. Yet we have a Ruth who didn’t run after men, rich or poor. We also have a godly Boaz.
It’s always gratifying that the LORD always maintains His remnant. A light never goes off. The light will one days shine brighter than evil when the creating Light shows up and darkness must scatter. Amen.
