Judges 19b Commentary
Events of Chapter 19 beg the question, “How did we get here?”
Many have talked about the “animal in man” to describe humanity’s low moments.
But even this extreme definition won’t fit the behavior of men in this chapter.
The end product of wickedness is a life on the lowest end of things. You are reduced to less than an animal. The serpent’s position on the ground is very low, but wickedness takes you lower than the “ground”.
Yes, we are here because there is a deliberate plan to get us here, downgrading us to a level lower than an animal.
This chapter is a huge success in the kingdom of darkness!
Yes, we are shocked; it’s an emotional drain, but we are yet to hear God’s perspective.
But we already have God’s perspective on this matter.
“…for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.” Leviticus 18 verses 28 and 28.
Chapter 20 is God’s reaction to the events of Chapter 19.
The LORD God didn’t create these creatures – the men in this chapter. This isn’t the product about which He declared, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
You easily understand why the “clear-out” sentence is immediately declared! Chapter 20 has the details. But don’t expect this command in these lines. You may have to go back to the Torah and see God’s word in full action. It never misses!
