Joshua 24 Commentary
Joshua: Leader. His farewell speech. There is no leadership transition. Strange!
Joshua: Commander-In-Chief. His handover notes. There is none. Strange!
Yes, there is a leadership transition. It is “Joshua to all Israel”, represented by their elders, leaders, judges, and officers of the people.
At the same time, it is “Joshua to the individual Israelite man”. He leads by example by declaring, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” An individual can isolate himself from community-wide wickedness!
An individual can isolate himself from community-wide failure. An individual can enjoy victory all by himself!
Yes, the Commander-In-Chief hands over key military strategies and access codes to weaponry. Summarize all in one word: ADONAI. That’s all there is! ADONAI is the secret access code to Israel’s most lethal weaponry!
The strategy for both the conquest and subsequent security of the nation is summarized in one word: ADONAI. Serve ADONAI alone and exclusively – the Creator God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Joshua openly shares secret military intelligence information. Whoever cares about victory can have it!
It also means whoever cares about fighting against your victory can have it. So the information is used by both the saint and the evil one. The evil one knows your secret!
Temptations exist to play on your military strategy. Joshua warns: “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness.”
Joshua closes on a note that looks to the future. The saint can yield his heart to the LORD (ADONAI) and always win!
No book mirrors the Christian walk more than this book! It’s always a walk towards God’s desired destiny, and enemies exist along the way. The saint knows what to do; the saint knows how to do it.
