Deuteronomy 32 Commentary
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Verse 4.
Timeless and impossible but there we have it, “His ways are perfect!” He does no wrong!
On the other side is humanity. Imperfect. Unjust. Unreliable. Unfaithful. Faithless. Always doing wrong!
How can they be His children! Verse 5.
Chapter 32 is a song but the truths are plain. Infidelity is both a future and a past occurrence. It’s a problem of humanity.
Like begets like. How can Perfection bear imperfection? How can a just God have unjust children? No wonder they are no longer His children!
The puzzle is not answered until Calvary. Jesus’ perfection means we finally have a human being who can claim to be the son of God. He can occupy the impossible space of the child of God. Finally, like begets like!
A judge who frees the criminal cannot be said to be just. So Moses’ sin is duly punished by banishment from a triumphant procession into Canaan. He will see the “lovely land” from afar. Won’t Moses’ punishment remind us of our own more serious failings!
The LORD summons Moses for a last ride up the mountain. There he would be gathered to his people.
