Deuteronomy 29b Commentary

Deuteronomy 29b Commentary

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”

Indeed, it should be simple: “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Humanity needs no other data!

The things revealed are for us, for our life. Desire no more knowledge beyond the Law of God. Let life be simple!

Yes, there is data out there but with the saint’s sole focus on the Law, this other existence with its data is inconsequential. They were naked but knew nothing about it. Who cared?

Salvation is a call to a sole focus on the Law – what God says and nothing else. Obedience is everything.

Knowledge often equals trouble. More of it means more trouble. We cannot be wiser; only God is. We shouldn’t complicate obedience. Hear it. Keep it. Obey it. The covenant is simple. Seek nothing else.

But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. Verse 4. It’s a lament on zero knowledge of God; it’s an indictment on Israel’s knowledge of everything else but the knowledge of God.

Chapter 29 underlines the covenant for the new generation and everyone else afterward. The centrality of the Law of God in creation isn’t a joke. You live by it. Without it, you don’t live at all.

Furious anger and great wrath mean pain and suffering but they are nothing but generosity from Heaven. You can see tomorrow because salvation is still on the menu. We see unsurpassed generosity when idol worshippers are punished in the hope that they can reduce their knowledge to the Creator God alone.
