Deuteronomy 28c Commentary
Poverty is a direct consequence of disobedience. Poverty in all areas.
Poverty of good health. Diseases you have never heard of. Incurable diseases. Include confusion of the mind but distinguish it from mental madness, which is also part of the parcel.
Poverty of food. Never mind diligence. No human effort can solve the hunger problem. The ground won’t simply produce for humanity. Grow your food but you won’t enjoy the produce. The effort is cursed, and so is the produce!
The weather won’t be kind. Scorching heat. Elements of nature won’t cooperate. They will produce thorns!
Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. Verse 17. Both the wheat and bread are cursed. You won’t have money; those who have it won’t enjoy it.
No one escapes this punishment. Of course, the devil provides a fake escape route and fake success. Let the saint know. Only the Creator God, the LORD God Almighty, can provide peace—the Prince of Peace. Everything else is fake.
Curses run through life without exception. You still starve, with or without food. General grace (common grace) provides enough fuel to facilitate man’s salvation. It’s the reason we have tomorrow!
You cannot give what you don’t have. The devil won’t give the peace he doesn’t have! It’s a scam!
Deuteronomy 28 explains human suffering in one word: Disobedience. Physical sciences and social sciences won’t explain suffering. Complex commercial algorithms won’t solve the problem of suffering. Obedience is the only solution, verses 1 to 14.
The wisdom of this world won’t understand it. But it’s nothing beyond obedience!
