Deuteronomy 26 Commentary
Thank the LORD God with tithes and the first fruits. Do more. Recite your history before the LORD. Know where you are coming from. Know where the LORD God picked you from. Your Thanksgiving will be richer!
The declarations constitute prayer before the LORD God. The main lines tell us what should be important in prayer.
Confirm that the LORD God has fulfilled His promises. The basket full of fruits is the evidence. It may be your monthly income or your property!
Admit that the LORD God has provided an increase and caused fruitfulness. Every good prayer involves a deep appreciation of the LORD’s involvement in our day-to-day activities.
Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands nor have I forgotten any of them. Verse 13.
In our culture, confession is often encouraged but in the negative. But this chapter encourages us to confess in the positive. Display your good works on the altar of prayer. Let the good works be evidence of your obedience. Confess obedience.
The chapter closes with a call to obedience. It’s a condition in the contract – the covenant.
