Deuteronomy 19b Commentary

Deuteronomy 19b Commentary

This chapter contrasts two “opposing” sides of the LORD God. When God designs cities of refuge, we see compassion and love for His creation.

The innocent shouldn’t die. Those who accidentally cause death shouldn’t die. Compassion at work!

Nearly in the same line, we have the cold commandment: Eye for eye. Let not the murderer live! Justice at work!

“Eye for an eye” was the means by which God commanded Israel to “purge evil from among them”. It applied to the justice system. Punishment must be visible and applied consistently. “The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you.” Verse 20.

Jesus’ “Eye for an eye” law is amended to function differently. In the Old Testament, it served as a deterrent. In the New Testament, it serves as a catalyst in a process that makes a man more like Jesus. It is also personal.

In the Old Testament, the “Eye for an eye” law was probably what the judge kept in his locker. In the New Testament, the revised law must be written in the mind of any man, titled or untitled – everyone calling themselves children of the Creator God, the LORD God Almighty.

Don’t pay back evil with evil. This isn’t for men at the courts of law; it’s for you and me.
