Deuteronomy 18 Commentary
Taking care of priests (ministers), whose job is it? I guess your answer is as good as mine. But we are wrong. It’s the church’s responsibility!
God takes care of them!
They eat from God’s table at the Sanctuary!
The saint loves the LORD God so much that he or she serves Him a meal. Then, the LORD God gives part of the meal served to the priest.
From this chapter, the picture isn’t that Levi gets paid for his services at the Sanctuary. However, the reality is that the LORD God generously shares with Levi at the Sanctuary.
Let Israel separate herself from the evil practices of the nations whose land they are about to inherit. It’s a reminder for the saint to stay separate – embracing the values of the kingdom whose king and head is Christ. Let the saint take note of today’s occult practices and stay away from them.
Moses looks to the future and speaks about another prophet.
Israel would be privileged to host another prophet in the manner of Moses. The only prophet meeting this description is the LORD Jesus Christ. Other great prophets like Elijah and Isaiah pointed to the Christ and not themselves.
The Christ had to be born of man to satisfy Israel’s demand for a human representative.
Moses isn’t thinking of the office of the Prophet. You easily understand why we don’t have a dynasty running from Moses. The LORD God defines the call and its timing. Moses’s departure left a vacancy. The LORD God filled this space temporarily – in time and space, to warm the office until the real prophet would arrive.
And each of the office warmers pointed to the real office bearer who the LORD God would send. It is a privilege to live in a time when we can look at all these things and see them in their right context.
Of course, Moses is a complex character combining all sorts of offices, mirroring, in part, the work of the Son: Leader, Priest, Intercessor, Mediator, Judge, King, Prophet… But the lineup for the Son is infinitely long! Think of the Prince of Peace and know no human can fill that space! He is life; He is the life we should be! Incomprehensible!
