Deuteronomy 16 Commentary
Scripture explains scripture. Eat the Passover lamb with unleavened bread. Why unleavened bread? Verse 3 explains it: “Because you left Egypt in haste.”
Unleavened bread is easy to make. It’s the kind you make if you are in a hurry. It also lasts longer – the kind you need for a long trip.
The man-maker, the Creator God knows how human memory works. Human memory keeps a lot of information without ordering – nothing is tagged “Most Important.”
The feature to keep information untagged and unsorted and unprioritized can be a liability in an exam! But God knows how we need it exactly like that!
There is a way to keep critical data pinned. Practice. Rehearse. Act. Model the experience. Relive it.
Relive the Passover. Relive it without flowers. Act the main lines without introducing comfort. Keep your memory correctly fed. Regularly with the right dosage of data. Know you are free. Keep this knowledge. Know the difference. You are no longer in Egypt.
This is better than TV in concept. Everyone is an actor. It’s the same movie acted over and over again, but you are killing a different lamb every year. It is real. God is the star! His intervention is the main line.
Of course, the devil has his own cheap imitation: Show the same murder but change the weapon. Show the same wickedness but change the scenery and the masks. Maintain the theme: Wickedness.
Israel must observe these feasts without fail. It’s a movie about God’s relationship with humanity – the life.
We could dig deep and unearth the limitless value of these feasts as they relate to Calvary and everything that comes with the Son – the Son born to us. The one with the government on His shoulder – the eternal government.
Do church repeatedly. Pray continually. Give thanks in all situations and at all times. The New Testament has a beautiful way of putting these pieces together. Let not the saint feel bored because of “these” things. Jesus business isn’t boring! It’s a conclusion you easily make once you get started!
