Deuteronomy 8b Commentary
The LORD God does two things: Verse 3 and verse 9. He humbles Israel, causing them to hunger, verse 3. Then He brings them prosperity, “a land where… they lack nothing”, verse 9.
Let’s check the facts. He humbles them not because they have sinned or they have deserved it. It is a test. They are in a classroom. Let them learn that “man doesn’t live on bread alone…” Let them know what is in their hearts. Verse 2.
He elevates them, bringing them prosperity. They haven’t deserved it. Not because Israel is stronger. It is another lesson in itself. Let not Israel say, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” Verse 17.
The world puts success in man’s hands. He is responsible for his own success. The Kingdom functions differently. God comes first. He is the reason for wealth or the lack of it.
“Reason for wealth” when He causes it, regardless. “Reason for the lack of it” when He withdraws it. But in all things, the saint thanks and praises the name of the LORD! 1 Thessalonians 5 verses 18.
Israel must remember the God who causes them extreme hunger, bringing them to point zero. He is their only option. He feeds them. Israel shouldn’t forget.
Israel must remember the God who brings them prosperity, bringing them to a land flowing with milk and honey, all undeserved. Israel shouldn’t forget.
The saint must be aware of the change in the names of the Egyptian and Canaanite gods. They are now called Education, Experience, Hard Work, Smart, Intelligent, Power, and Control… If your success comes from any of these, know that you have dethroned the LORD God.
“…It is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.” Verse 18.
You guess these lectures aren’t easy even for us today! You understand why these causes are repeated severally!
