Deuteronomy 8 Commentary

Deuteronomy 8 Commentary

Flood your memory with the knowledge of how God has led you. Yes, there are great moments. But there are also bumps; the scripture calls them tests.

The God who ensured that “clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell” could have easily kept hunger and thirst away from Israel’s community! All the signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea meant Israel had a rich memory bank of God’s wonders.

Suffering can be time for an exam; you must pass it.

It can also be when God humbles you; you must know when to depend on the LORD God. It’s a time of zero options. God becomes the only option. God will have removed all the layers of security.

It is a classroom; hear, perceive, and understand. Walk away with a lesson. Know who provides light. It isn’t the Egyptian sun god. Food doesn’t come from some fertility god. We are not satisfied because we plowed the land and worked hard to produce enough food. Know the facts.

“Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

That’s the lesson!

Know it’s not your good education, eloquence, smart mental engine, beauty, or favorable economic environment. Know who is responsible. That’s the lesson!

Yes, the land can support agricultural activities and mining, but don’t be fooled. Know man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

“Remember” and “Don’t forget”: Both verbal fronts are underlined. One reason for Israel’s countless rituals is to ensure they “remembered”. The LORD may introduce “lack” in your life to ensure you don’t forget.

What should Israel remember? God provided water from a rock! It meant and still means many things but one important line of thought is that water came from an impossible source! Israel must also remember that they ate manna from “nowhere”.

If you thank God for a fat bank account, know you haven’t yet begun your faith journey! Thank God for an empty bank account and know your reliance on God is at a good level!

If your bank account is full, know who the source is. Otherwise, you may be forced into a classroom – caused to suffer so that you can know “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
