Deuteronomy Chapter 3
The defeat of both Sihon and Og is big news. It remains a subject of fond memories in scripture, especially the Psalms. We are looking at key events without any specific order as the man of God takes us down memory lane.
The conquered land is given to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. The long-awaited promise is being fulfilled!
The conquest of the Amorite territory is so sweet that Moses begins to petition the LORD for mercy. He wants to experience life in the newly conquered territories. Who wouldn’t want to see it? He had spent all his life dreaming of this moment. Even now, the plunder alone and the many cities taken over by Israel point to greater things for the rest of the Community. But the LORD won’t listen. The decision is final. Moses is to go exactly as planned.
The prayers that proved so successful for others could not bring about change in his own circumstances. Moses is forbidden from even talking about it. Who intercedes for Moses?
Israel sinned but survived annihilation because Moses prayed. But who prays for Moses?
We can see the need for mediation even in these lines. The thought of someone somewhere righteous enough comes to mind. He won’t be ordered to keep quiet. He earned the respect of Heaven when he sacrificed Himself. God elevated Him above everyone else and everything else.
Such is the level of holiness required by the LORD that even the great Moses fails to make the grade!
