Numbers 10 Commentary

Numbers 10 Commentary: A signaling system is installed.

In the absence of emails, phone systems, or sirens, the trumpet is used for signaling. We call it ‘organization’. It is communication!

As noted earlier, the holy script is not a science or management book. But who doesn’t get blessed (and amazed) by these detailed management drills! Top-level organization!

The instruction to sound the trumpet during wartime and also during religious festivals seems to suggest that the LORD was interested in trumpet noise. The fall of Jericho about 40 years later is a good example!

We can still think of it as a signal sent to the LORD for help during war. It is a signal to ‘alert’ the LORD of man’s presence. “We are here.”

Music and prayer today seem to fit some functions of this chapter’s ‘trumpet signaling system’ as it relates to ‘wartime’ and ‘festivals’.

Moses’ request to Hobab to accompany them tells us that the LORD provided general direction and Moses completed the details. Humans have a part to play!

Chapter 10 sees the community on the move once again. Sinai had been home for two years and now Jacob is headed for the Promised Land. Schooling has ended and the graduates must now head towards their destiny.

The two years conditioned Israel in terms of laws, organization, and readiness for the conquest of Canaan. Israel was ready to exist as a nation under God.

The community sets out exactly as planned. The division of Judah is leading the charge. We can look back at these many chapters of preparation and appreciate the need for every saint to invest in godly and adequate preparation before taking off to seize their destiny.

The census of Chapter 1 was about counting the cost. Chapter 2 was about the required military strategy for the charge. The next several chapters detailed the care and maintenance of the Sanctuary. The care and maintenance of the real temple of the Holy Spirit is everything! The Christian walk is perfectly mirrored by these activities here.
