Leviticus 25 Commentary
The chapter expands our understanding of the Sabbath. It’s a concept and not a physical day!
The Sabbatical year rests the land. It counts to 7 years. The Year of Jubilee is also a Sabbath, counting to 49 years, seven multiplied by seven. It rests people from slavery and poverty.
The keyword for the Sabbath is rest. Mortals should be replenished for a fresh start, and the land also needs rest.
The Year of Jubilee represents rest: Rest from slavery, rest from debts, rest from loss, and rest from the burden of guilt.
The real Sabbath comes when the LORD Jesus calls out: – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11verse 28.
The Sabbatical year is a real test of obedience. The LORD God commands that the land rests in the seventh year. But there is no starvation as the LORD provides enough food in the sixth year to cover the loss of production in the seventh year.
We are reminded of the seven years of plenty and the seven years of famine. The LORD God knows how to feed Israel in difficult times!
It would be easier to say, 49th year but the LORD is counting Sabbaths. So the detailed description of the period is necessarily long. When the Bible takes the long route in describing things, just know there is importance in the long curve.
The law may appear repressive. The many Sabbaths may appear burdensome. But it is only so because of our poor understanding of the concept of the Sabbath. There are no losses during the Sabbath. Instead, the Sabbath provides the required propensity for both physical and spiritual life.
The last section deals with slavery amongst God’s people. It is not allowed. They may transact with pagan nations but enslaving a fellow Israelite is strictly forbidden. They are already slaves of God.
