Leviticus 15 Commentary

Leviticus 15 Commentary

The closing verses summarize the chapter perfectly and explain why we have these strange regulations: The LORD God is in the camp, so cleanliness is a top priority!

These regulations serve as a big STOP sign. Don’t touch. Or, Danger, proceed no further. They are deterrents.

These restrictions concerning reproduction or childbearing process exist to create an environment of sanctity. As previously observed, hygiene and protection are keywords.

The flow of blood could be a sickness, but the LORD God hates it. Some “natural” happenings (existing without man’s invitation) are objects of displeasure for the LORD God. They disturb God’s desired design.

Childbearing is a delegated task. Sanctity would help guard against mindlessness, prayerlessness, and outright rebellion in these life-giving processes.

The physical benefits are clearly alluded to when we hear mentions of bathing with water as part of the cleansing process. Is the LORD interested in cleanliness? On the evidence of Chapter 15, yes.
