Leviticus 9 Commentary
Behold the Sanctuary. Behold the community. But God’s Glory is absent. What must be done?
Moses prescribes several activities “so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.” Verse 6.
- Sin or purification offering
- Burnt offering
- Fellowship offering
- Grain offering – which in essence is part of the fellowship offering.
Sin offering: Sin separates humanity from the Creator God. This wall must come down!
Burnt offering: All other offerings have this component, the burnt offering. But there is one offering that carries this name to the full. It’s the main thing! All other offerings have this end in mind.
The end product of the “Burnt Offering”, either as part of another offering or as a component by itself, is the “Sweet Aroma” – pleasing the LORD.
All 4 offerings, together with their various versions in size, time, or type, have one overriding objective, the “Sweet Aroma” – pleasing the LORD.
This is interesting. The Tabernacle with the revered Ark isn’t God. It is the representation of the LORD God. The LORD commands Aaron via Moses to get ready for the physical appearance of the presence of God, even at this stage. Israel knows the Tabernacle is simply a representation. The reality of the presence of God is something else!
After every instruction is executed to perfection, the LORD appears in the form of a consuming fire that burns the sacrifices. The key moment is here. This event teaches us the importance of these rituals as we see them fulfilled in the LORD Jesus Christ.
The saint is also drawn to thinking about these rituals as actions. Christianity is in the actions. It is in the walk. What we think about, what we say, our feelings, and our actions are all important. Like these rituals, these are physical activities.
