Exodus 39 Commentary
Having completed the physical structure of the Tabernacle, attention is now drawn to the priests. The dress code. Of importance are the names of Jacob’s twelve children engraved on the vestments.
The priest’s work is to represent God’s people before the LORD. He should not forget. The names of the sons of Israel are engraved; it’s a lasting print. They hang next to the priest’s heart. Don’t connect and interact with the saints with your brain; use your heart!
An array of jewels represents the twelve tribes. These precious stones represent special value—Israel has special value before the LORD. Gold portions of the vestments represent money value or importance.
Man’s desire for the presence of the LORD should outrival his desire for gold. Gold represents value. We also have precious stones.
When you find God, you have found a special stone of infinitely incredible value. The vestments of the priests represent all this.
The attire itself speaks volumes, but it’s not enough! The LORD demanded that the words, “Dedicated to the LORD”, be written on the vestments.
Israel has made everything as the LORD commanded. The LORD’s house is ready! The owner should come and dwell in this house, but that is for the next chapter.
Note that the LORD’s house is a tent! Everyone else lives in a tent; the LORD also decides to live in a tent among His people. A low-income man should take encouragement from the thought that the LORD is living in a tent right next to his, under the same conditions.
