Exodus 31 Commentary

Exodus 31 Commentary

Moses is still up on the mountain receiving instructions – the Law, technical drawings for the Sanctuary and the components, and housekeeping elements for the Sanctuary.

The construction work is complex and requires expert hands. The LORD God provides Bezalel and Oholiab, two experts specifically chosen for the delicate and complex works on the Tabernacle.

This chapter provides a strong basis for prayer by the saint who needs wisdom and skills.

The Sabbath law is repeated and the reason for keeping this law is underlined.

For the LORD, resting on the seventh day wasn’t for refreshing. He wasn’t tired. He didn’t need replenished energy!

For us, the Sabbaths come in between work, or we take a Sabbath rest so that we are refreshed for another six-day run.

For the LORD, it appears the seventh day was actually a ‘commissioning day’ – signifying the completion of works and a new start for us. In a way, observing the Sabbath was a celebration of creation.

But looking at it as a symbol of what the real Seed (the Son) would eventually fulfill, makes us appreciate the deeper and largely unknown things about the Sabbath.

As we have seen, the LORD is always restarting with us, giving each one of us a new page on which to write our story anew every day, a start with the LORD. Each day is a commissioning day. Each day is Sabbath day. So as we observe the Sabbath day on a daily basis, we are reflecting on the completed work of the LORD Jesus. The author of the book of Hebrews relates today (every day) to the Sabbath.

The handover ceremony is finalized and Moses walks away with two volumes of literature. They contain the sacred writings of the LORD – the covenant law. It has been 40 days up the fiery mountain of fire and smoke.
