Exodus 30 Commentary
Moses is still on top of Mount Sinai receiving the following: Laws, Technical drawings for the structures, and procedures for the worship system.
We have looked at the Altar of Offering, and now the LORD gives Moses the detailed design for the Altar of Incense. Incense is to be burned regularly on the Altar of Incense, indicating that the saint’s prayers must be offered regularly during the day. The incense produces an aroma that pleases the LORD.
May the prayers of saints go up before the LORD as a sweet aroma!
“And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.” Revelation 5 verse 8.
Let the LORD hear your voice regularly during the day. It is a sweet aroma before the LORD.
In a strange move, the LORD God commands Moses to impose a ‘census tax’. We don’t think of it as a “Community Membership Fee”. Rather, it appears like a thanksgiving token for being alive – life itself is a free gift the LORD offers.
A wash basin is provided for hygiene but importantly, as a physical representation of the need for inner cleansing.
The constant reference to death as a penalty for any deviation and contravention is a constant reminder of man’s dead situation without God.
The anointing oil is to be made using a special formula. No duplicates! Equally, the incense has a special formula. Even with the symbols, the LORD God wants to be unique!
Look at what the anointing oil and incense stand for. Then know why duplicates are forbidden!
“The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives.” Verse 15. See how each human head is the same as all the other heads, regardless of physical possessions! Business class or economy class, who cares? The scale in Heaven is not calibrated for physical possessions!
