Exodus 28 Commentary
“Separate them from the people of Israel, so that they may serve me as priests”. Verse 1.
We thought God wanted every Israelite man to be a priest! What happened?
The dress code for Aaron and his sons follows. Yes, clothes hide nakedness, but they also provide dignity and project an environment of importance. You guess the world today lacks both objectives.
Reminder: Moses is still on the mountain, receiving the instructions. The process will take 40 days.
The design for the ephod is detailed here. It’s part of the dress code for priests. Of great importance is the engraving of the names of Israel’s children. A priest must always carry the thought of God’s people in bold print. You guess it is one function we carry quite poorly. The world is increasingly individualistic and so the church is similarly becoming individualistic.
The ephod was very similar to the apron in design.
The Breast piece was a square pocket with special stones (jewels) arranged in three rows of four items per row on the surface, representing the 12 tribes of Israel. Inside the pocket were two stones, the Urim and Thummim. The stones were used for decision-making. It was attached to the ephod by strings.
Other vestments are detailed in this chapter. Dressing can have a purpose. It can bring shame to God’s holy name but in can also bring honor and reverence to God’s name.
