Exodus 19 Commentary

Exodus 19 Commentary

While in Egypt, probably no more than three months before, the Creator God declared Himself the God of the Hebrews. But the Hebrews themselves were yet to meet their God! They would meet Him on this mountain, Sinai.

Exactly two months after Israel left Egypt, they arrived at Mount Sinai – Here they would worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – and soon to be their God too. Probably in fulfillment of God’s word to Moses:

And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” 3v12. We guess this could be the site of the “Burning Bush” where the LORD God reveals Himself.

Prepare your pen! Here is the contract! The covenant is spelled out. The key word is obedience. Keep the terms of this contract and the LORD God would be Israel’s God. And Israel would be God’s treasured possession.

They would serve the LORD God as priests – everyone. Such generosity! Such love! Incredible Abundance!

What are these commands that the LORD God wants Israel to keep? We shall find them in Chapter 20. It’s the same commandment that Abraham received but now expanded to 10 commandments. “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.” Genesis 17v1.

Christianity is simple. Forget all the rituals. It all comes down this: “Walk before me faithfully and be blameless.”
