Exodus 18 Commentary

Exodus 18 Commentary

The highlight comes when Jethro (Moses’ father-in-law) advises Moses to delegate authority. The chapter has introduced us to an administrative structure.

The origin of this structure is interesting. The LORD has been talking to Moses all this time. Moses is suffering but the LORD keeps quiet. Only through Jethro does the LORD speak. In this chapter, we learn that the message may come from the LORD through other means.

Moses takes the word and an administrative structure is born. Moses learns from Jethro.

But who is Jethro? We knew him as Reuel. 2v18-20. He is the tool the LORD used to host Moses for 40 years in Midian. He was a priest and one who was more than willing to “bless” Israel. He honored the God of the Hebrews. He became one with them.

Yes, the LORD God has used him today to establish an administrative structure in Israel. But we know the LORD God used him in many other ways. Moses would later establish the priesthood in Israel but we guess Jethro had a say in it – or provided the picture and motivation for it.

God uses our experiences (or exposes us to certain experiences) to achieve His purposes. One’s life circumstances aren’t for the sake of just living!

It is interesting to consider the things the LORD exposes us to. They are all important, both now and in the future.

The LORD God speaks to us using any means.

Delegation is an important topic in any management class. The LORD God has underlined it in this chapter. Then you know it’s important!
