Exodus 17 Commentary
“…traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. Verse 1. We shouldn’t miss it. The “long” trip to Canaan is under the direct control of Heaven. But the presence of hiccups is interesting!
The saint must learn this lesson. The path the LORD elects for you won’t always be smooth! He has His own reasons. We may never understand them!
We have another water shortage. Then comes the history-long question, “Why did you bring us up out of …?” Yes, out of a life that guaranteed me a car, meal, or respectability! Yes, out of a deal that would make me climb the status ladder!
And these would be real needs!
In addition to the miracle of water out of the rock, we have a military situation to look at. The Amalekites attack and Israel must respond.
The solution is interesting. Of course, there is no Red Sea to swallow the enemy! Equally, the ground doesn’t open up to destroy the attackers. A swarm of bees can destroy the enemy without much trouble. But these options are not available.
The saint must know what tools he or she has in every battle situation.
Israel must fight physically. But prayer is a critical component! Moses and Hur and Aaron climb up the mountain to pray. Aaron and Hur help Moses with the physical things. Joshua must do a good job in the valley but the real power comes from Moses’ intercession up the mountain.
Yes, life gives us many valleys. These are trouble moments. But let there be a mountain upon which you climb and lift your hands in prayer.
These events shape the saint into a trusting son or daughter who is ready to serve the King!
