Exodus 13 Commentary
Moses carries Joseph’s bones out of Egypt. He keeps the rich tradition of the patriarchs. They must be buried in Canaan, the land God gave them. Egypt isn’t home. Moses understands the importance of traditions and culture. For this reason, he was raised in the palace – a place where preserving a people’s culture is everything.
Joseph’s bones are a special parcel of Israel. It connects them to the promise of El Shaddai. The exodus isn’t an accident. The patriarchs knew the details; it was a question of when and not if.
Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. Verse 22. The saint is reminded of the promise of the LORD Jesus Christ: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
“If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” Verse 17. El Shaddai understands our weaknesses! He picks battles we can win.
“In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. Verse 14. Let there be evidence of the works of the LORD in the saint’s life? Is there anything about which your son could ask, “What does this mean?”
You redeem your firstborn son by killing a lamb in his place as an offering to the LORD God. In this way, you have given him over to the LORD God. But it remained a sign of the hand of the LORD against Pharaoh which earned freedom for Israel.
Effectively, the LORD forbids child sacrifice. No human shall be killed as part of worship! It’s a repeat of God’s message to Abraham. Isaac was never to be sacrificed. A Lamb was killed in Isaac’s place. The LORD God would not accept anything else.
“Breaking of Bread” or “Holy Communion” remains a sign of the hand of the LORD God against His own Son which earned humanity freedom from evil – His own firstborn son. The real Lamb of God. Ponder.
