Exodus 10 Commentary
The signs begin to affect the economy of the nation – a fact Pharaoh’s officials appreciate more than their boss. The sign of Locusts is swiftly followed by the sign of ‘Darkness’.
To our ears, these signs appear as random acts of punishment. But in reality, they serve a deeper role. The message is that the LORD is lord over elements of weather and not Egyptian gods.
The sign of ‘darkness’ for three days is a strong message to the prominent Egyptian god – the Sun god.
Pretenders have hijacked and diverted glory to themselves by claiming control over elements of weather. Some claim they make rain while others claim powers over the fertility of the womb and soil. Darkness for 3 days has exposed these pretender gods.
The LORD calls them signs because they are signs – symbols. They are signs of the presence of a higher power – a power higher than the Egyptian gods. Let Israel know; let Egypt know. A knowledgeable Israel will communicate this experience to her children and the children after them.
There is no better way of preserving this information than having it in print. The aim is to preserve a special knowledge of their God as the all-powerful Creator God. The LORD God won’t repeat these signs to every generation. It becomes the task of one generation to pass on this information to the next generation.
The Bible explains itself; its purpose is stated. It’s for succeeding generations to know the mighty works of the LORD.
For the Locusts to be stopped, Moses has to go back to the LORD in prayer – like the LORD God doesn’t know what is going on! The saint must know how the LORD God operates. The saint is an important part of the process through prayer. The locusts remained on the land until Moses prayed. What things have remained unchanged because the believer hasn’t prayed?
Of course, Moses won’t appear before Pharaoh again – not because Pharaoh has decreed it, but because the LORD has said so. Mortals aren’t as in charge as they want to believe! It takes a lot to humble a mortal!
