Exodus 5 Commentary

Exodus 5 Commentary

Having secured the support of the elders, Moses now faces Pharaoh. We can understand Pharaoh.

It took the LORD a long debate to convince Moses. It took some miracles to convince the elders of the people. It should take a lot more to persuade Pharaoh!

It is clear: Pharaoh doesn’t know the LORD God or thinks the LORD God is one of the many gods of Egypt. Why should he listen to Moses?

The first encounter results in increased suffering for Israel. And Israel responds to increased suffering by blaming Moses. Of course, Moses was warned, but who cares in these moments! We are logical beings. We work with equations. The right procedure should be balanced by the right outcome. We feel for Moses.

Moses reports these events to the LORD God. The summary of the report is that Moses has executed the task, as required. Pharaoh hasn’t yielded.

The reporting structure remains intact. Don’t complain about Pharaoh. Equally, don’t complain about a lack of understanding by the brethren. Take it to God in prayer. He is the one who has rocked the boat!

Have you ever prayed for someone only to see them get worse? Have you ever prayed over a situation only to see it worsen? Don’t be discouraged. The LORD does allow the devil to respond this way for our sake. We need a better victory!
