Exodus 4 Commentary

Exodus 4 Commentary

Moses is a logical man. Who would blame him? But the LORD God is gracious enough and attends to all the issues Moses raises.

The LORD God knows exactly what will happen but gets involved in the “if” situations with Moses for Moses’s benefit. If they don’t believe ‘A’, go for option ‘B’, otherwise go for option ‘C’. One of these should work. That’s more comfortable for mortals!

A battle with mortals requires eloquence. But Moses doesn’t have it! Consequently, Moses won’t take the job. The LORD fixes this disability but Moses finally tells the truth; he isn’t interested in the job – no reason!

There could be a simple reason for Moses’s refusal: Fear. We also learn that fear doesn’t need any reason to exist. However, fear hides behind many reasons – at times behind countless reasons.

The LORD God takes Moses through a process of discovery to uncover and deal with fear. It’s for our benefit. These elements exist independent of the environment. Love doesn’t need reasons; it’s unconditional! Equally, fear doesn’t need reasons to exist. It exists even after the LORD God clears all its hideouts!

How does Moses look now? Illogical? Yes. But remember how, and just how logical he appeared when he questioned the LORD over his suitability for the job? We all finally look unreasonable when our hideouts are exposed!

How dare Moses feel and think the Creator God has recruited badly! Moses is the right man. Full stop!

It’s an easy pick from this chapter: the LORD will wire you up appropriately – in case you feel inadequate for the task. Fear won’t be a show-stopper! Watch out for limiting factors – there aren’t limiting factors at all! Not in the eyes of the LORD! They shouldn’t be in your eyes!

Moses won’t go to Egypt, not for lack of “power”. Check your reason and know your lack of effort may not be for a lack of power, opportunity, or resources. Whatever it is, know it’s never a lack of calling. Also, know the LORD God won’t buy into any of these hideouts.

God’s message to Aaron is, “Go… meet Moses”. No more details are given. He will get the details from Moses. There are times when the LORD God hides information and instructions behind individuals. You must hear them.

The chapter closes with the statement: “They bowed down and worshipped.” Poor Israel! Never one to worship without physical evidence. The LORD Jesus won’t be impressed with them! “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”
