Exodus 3 Commentary

Exodus 3 Commentary

Human resource management is rarely listed as one of the roles of the LORD Jesus. This chapter is all about recruitment.

Yes, recruitment but the LORD God isn’t a headhunter. The candidate was selected and gloomed for the office over many years – from his birth. Of course, the candidate doesn’t know it yet. But that’s for chapter 4. For now, we focus on the job offer.

Horeb is synonymous with Sinai; plenty of things will happen. It’s the site for the “job interview”.

But wait a minute; what exactly is Moses’ role? The LORD God just mentioned He has come down to rescue Israel! Yes, God and not Moses! Will Moses simply be a front? It appears this is the situation here.

We see excess generosity when the LORD God makes the first step to seek Moses. But Moses mustn’t come near the LORD. He must take off his sandals. Any place becomes holy ground when the LORD God shows up. The saint should probably go about his or her life barefoot!

Moses is commissioned to “bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But who is Moses to handle such a big task? Of course, Moses does not get it and so the LORD God repeats the specs. Moses is simply a front; the LORD God will be with him.

Then, the LORD God gives Moses a sign to check for success – that the LORD God has sent him. The end product is “worship God at this mountain.” There we have it; any venture or effort that doesn’t result in the worship of the Creator God isn’t commissioned by the LORD God.

Therefore, the worship of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the “end game” of every saint’s effort. That’s how you measure success!

The LORD God introduces Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He is the God of the promise – the blessing. Moses must know the details of the covenant and how it now applies to them.

Moses needs more information. Israelites know there are many gods in Egypt. Which one of these gods will Moses refer to? The Sun god? Moon, Nile, rain, crop…? None. The LORD God shall be known simply as the “I AM WHO I AM”.

The name suggests the intention of the LORD to be more than all these gods – individually or combined. We shall see how the plagues demonstrate who is the boss. At Moses’ command, there would be darkness in Egypt for 3 days and the Egyptian Sun god wouldn’t do anything about it!

The LORD God would be all things to Israel – we see it in the name!

Then the LORD God outlines the entire roadmap. The operation won’t be without opposition but freedom and wealth are the final words. The mention of wealth probably reminds us of the LORD’s care for our “cares”. So sweet!
