Genesis 2b Commentary

Exodus 2b Commentary

Moses’ first home is the Levite’s womb, fathered by a Levite man. It’s this home that defines his identity. He is a Hebrew, but importantly, he is a Levite.

Levi (and his elder brother Simeon) exterminated an entire city in response to the raping of their sister Dinah. Their reasoning was, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?” Genesis 34.

He didn’t say it but Moses’ reasoning wasn’t different. No one mistreats my brothers for free, he must have thought. The response was swift and fatal. A Levite does everything possible (including killing) to protect what they feel is close to their heart!

Moses’ critical formative years were spent under the watchful eyes of a Levite woman – the LORD ensuring Moses didn’t lose his identity as a Hebrew.

His next home would be Pharaoh’s palace. Yes, there is state administration but there is also history and a deeper appreciation of the importance of history. The important question of who he was and who his people were played its role in inspiring Moses to “author” the Torah.

His next home would be in Midian, at a priest’s home. His experiences here would shape his desire to institute the priesthood for Israel. How God uses human experiences to advance His interests is mind-boggling!

You first must learn the language. Then you can understand when the LORD mentions “priest” or “sacrifice”! Yes, something like that, but do it this way; it would always be easier for a mortal!

The LORD is always at work in the background. Moses is raised as a leader and he is fully ready to lead. But he will lead his people through the wilderness – a far cry from his palace experiences. He needed to experience the wilderness.

The saint can look at his or her life and see how every piece fits. Then you know the Master is at work!

Later, Moses receives the law from the LORD. He understands the importance of a constitution. A state won’t exist without one! He knows it! The LORD would not probably give you a fishing rod if you understand nothing about fishing! You might use it to whip your children instead of using it to fish and provide food for the same children!

Indeed the LORD is very deliberate when working with us. There is no stray experience. Elements of nature respond to his purpose – humans are a special element of creation, but an element, nevertheless. Our times and spaces are defined by our Creator. Exodus helps us appreciate God’s special interactions with mortals.

To remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is to invoke the provisions of the contract at this critical moment. But the provisions of the contract are all active, even before we know it!

There are more miracles than we think! College X ahead of college Y; that too, was a miracle!
