Exodus 2 Commentary
Chapter 2 does not mention God until the last verses when people cry out to Him for help. Strange indeed!
However, the LORD God has been very active all this time, through the conception and birth of Moses. Moses ends up at the palace. He is raised by a maid, his mother, who is paid to nurse her child! This is nothing but a miracle! A miracle in the same mold as the parting of the Red Sea!
While Genesis may equal the word “blessing”, Exodus may equal the word “miracle”. It’s about how God manipulates elements of nature to achieve His purpose. The reasoning and the courage of Moses’ mother isn’t an isolated human incident that the LORD takes advantage of. It’s a carefully planned situation.
The presence of Moses at the palace isn’t an accident. He will spend some years at a priest’s home in Midian. Both places give him tools for him to use during Israel’s formative years as a spiritual organism under a state. Seeing how extensively the LORD God is involved in Israel’s life is baffling!
Of course, God isn’t mute; but Israel is. The only communication we see from them to their God is ‘groaning’ over their enslavement. It’s not a very positive picture.
Only one man appears upset enough to take action. It is Moses. The solution is to kill the oppressor and free the enslaved. It doesn’t work well and Moses escapes punishment for his crime by fleeing the country. Midian is his destination, at a priest’s home identified as Reuel.
If groaning is the only communication between us and our God, then we are truly in trouble. What motivated your prayer this morning? Was it love for your God or your personal needs? Of the many lines you said in your prayer, how many can be described as ‘self-centered’?
The LORD God guides us through the normal flow of events to Himself. There are no accidents. There are no coincidences.
The LORD is long at work on your solution even before your report! The statement, “The God heard their groaning” is a figure of speech!
Know that the LORD Jesus stands at the door and knocks. He is more interested in your salvation than you are interested in your own.
