Genesis 39b Commentary
You cannot have a beautiful Rachel for a mother and be ugly! Joseph is truly Rachel’s son – well-built and handsome. Add the rich deposits of intelligence and wisdom and you have a model man! Divine expo, Joseph is the exhibit!
But he is a god-fearing man. Sorry, Mrs. Potiphar.
Yes, we get it. You don’t sin just because it is within your power to do so. We live in a world of temptations and fears. But there is only one Master to fear. Our allegiance to Him. Joseph has shown us the way. It is the LORD’S message to humanity on the need to see righteousness upheld at all times. Prosperity in the area of righteousness happens when the LORD is with you.
It’s a small line but we can read into it using the lens of Chapter 1 verse 28 – the original blessing. The original blessing underlines three areas: Increase, Prosperity, and Dominion.
We have a good picture of what it means to prosper. Never mind the details. The key thought is that the LORD is with Joseph, consequently, he prospers. The argument could be that prosperity disappeared from humanity when the Spirit of God left humanity on account of disobedience. Prosperity is determined by the Presence of the LORD.
Without God, prosperity becomes an impossibility. We may have fake versions but the real one comes when the LORD is with you. Many have built but without the LORD; it is all in vain.
We need to keep pace with the holy script. The Creator God creates mankind and blesses them. 1v28. Noah’s generation is exceedingly sinful and the LORD God destroys mankind. Noah survives and the LORD God repeats the blessing. 9v1. At Babel, mankind is sinful again. The LORD scatters mankind. Abraham is also scattered from here. He is isolated for a private walk with the Creator God.
The LORD God doesn’t bless mankind this time but promises to do so through Abraham’s seed. 12v1.
The blessing is the kingly status of Abraham and Isaac. It is the winner when one’s birth disadvantages them from the top slot. (Naturally, Jacob’s second-born status would permanently disqualify him from the blessing.) It also shines through slavery status. The prison fails to hold it back!
