Genesis 33 Commentary

Genesis 33 Commentary

Jacob meets Esau. Jacob has been big in terms of possessions and family. He left home empty but came back full.

The point is that the blessing of the LORD works from point zero. An individual with zero capabilities (probably even with negative capabilities like Jacob) can be raised up by the blessing of the LORD. Which sinner isn’t blessed with the opportunity to become the beloved of the LORD God?

It’s difficult to tell if Esau thought of the old Jacob against whose intrigues he needed resolve. There is a conman in the house, take care of your belongings. Probably he thought of taking care of his own empire. The Jacob he knew would love to take it. Who wouldn’t be scared?

But this Jacob is different – touched by the Hand of the LORD God.

Jacob is all humble. He no longer thinks of himself. He considers bowing before others (even his elder brother) as nothing. He does it gladly. The LORD God brings him to this point in his life. The blessing he sought so much means nothing close to physical prostrations or even possessions. It means more. Jacob now operates in a space of humility.

Yes, it’s about seeking favor. But the Jacob we knew would have resolved matters differently. The LORD God elects humility ahead of other means for Jacob. He has to undo his old self.

How many times has the LORD made you wash the feet of your servants only to prove your own status! You and they are the same before the LORD God!

Abram became Abraham because the LORD God needed to achieve something. Jacob became Israel because the LORD God wanted to achieve something. Isaac didn’t undergo any name change as his life was a straight line. However, many individuals are Jacobs and not Isaacs.
